JAKARTA – The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) recently partnered with Netflix’s on-demand video streaming platform to broadcast its documentary film on the Television Station of the Republic of Indonesia (TVRI) as a means of Learning from Home (BdR).
The first documentary that has been shown was ‘Our Planet’. It was broadcast on Saturday, June 20. TVRI became the first television station in the world to show Netflix films on TV.
Sadly, the program has received a lot of criticism from various parties. Such as the DPR and KPI (Indonesian Broadcasting Commission). The critic said that the collaboration between Kemendikbud and Netflix is just a market-oriented gimmick.
“We hope that through regular KPI meetings with the Ministry of Education and Culture, we can optimize the broadcast program of BdR (Learning from Home). Not only through TVRI. We hope that there will be involvement of all private broadcasters, both television and radio, to be involved in disseminating learning broadcast programs from home, “Central KPI Commissioner Hardly Stefano Pariela said in his official statement on Monday 22 June.
According to Hardly, rather than collaborate with Netflix, the Ministry of Education and Culture should empower local content creators and broadcasters. At present, there are already several programs from the broadcasting institutions that can be adjusted. The Ministry of Education and Culture can supervise the broadcast concept to support the Learning from Home program.
“Students could get fun learning materials. While on the other hand, the sustainability of national broadcasting institutions can also be strengthened,” he explained.
Not only KPI, The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Commission I, Abdul Kharis Almasyhari, said he was concerned about the cooperation between Netflix and the Ministry of Education and Culture. According to him, it is better that TVRI collaborates with national content providers.
Abdul Kharis admitted that this matter was still discussed at Commission I. Including the regulations about Netflix as media over the top (OTT).
As part of the BDR program and for the first time in the world, Netflix documentaries were screened on the TVRI channel. Starting June 20, 2020, Netflix’s documentary films will be aired. Including “Our Planet”, “Street Food: Asia”, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo”, “Spelling the Dream”, “Chasing Coral”, and “Night on Earth”. The documentary shows have been aired in Indonesian translations.
The English and Chinese versions are automatically generated by the system. So there may still be inaccuracies in translating, please always see Indonesian as our main language. (system supported by DigitalSiber.id)
